How to install Joomla Extensions

As part of our Begin with Joomla series, let us learn how to install Joomla extensions. Extensions are the plugins, modules and components that you can use to enhance, transform or extend your Joomla website.

There are thousands of extensions submitted by developers in the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED). They include both free and paid extensions. However, they are all available to every Joomla user in all its glory.

Available methods to install Joomla extensions

  • Install from Web.
  • Upload Package File.
  • Install from Folder.
  • Install from URL

We will briefly walk through each of these methods in this tutorial. You can choose any one of these methods as you deem fit or according to your convenience.

Install from Web

  1. Navigate to Extensions > Manage > Install.
  2. Select the tab Install from Web. If you haven’t activated this feature yet the image below will appear above the installation tabs on your back-end. So go ahead  and click on it for activation.

  3. Wait for a few seconds for the extensions directory to load. Once it appears, search for the extension that you have in mind and proceed with the installation.

Upload Package File

  1. Download the extension to your computer.
  2. Navigate to Extensions > Manage > Install.
  3. Select the tab Upload Package File.

  4. Choose the package file and click Upload & Install.

Install from Folder

  1. Download the extension to your computer.
  2. Upload and extract the zip file to a folder (or create one) that can accessed by the file manager of your hosting account. If for some reason you were unable to upload or extract the file using your web file manager then you’ll need FTP to upload after extracting them locally.
  3. Enter the absolute path to the folder that contains the extracted files.

  4. Click Check and Install.

Install from URL

  1. Download the extension either locally or to a web directory.
  2. If you have downloaded the extension to your local drive then upload the same to any directory accessible from the web.
  3. Enter the web address to the uploaded extension.

Conclusion

So these are a few ways by which you can install Joomla extensions. It should be noted that some extensions will require manual activation. So go through the documentation of every extension before installation.

It is also important to choose your extensions wisely. Some criteria include, support and maintenance, security, user reviews, documentation etc. A final word of caution is that some extensions leave their database entries behind even after uninstallation. So, if you do not like a bloated database, install only those extensions that you actually need.
